Grenada’s ”State” of the State

Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique has over the years seen it’s fair share of ”ups and downs”. Our history is colorful and rich.

”State” of the State aims to highlight and create discussions on burning issues.

First six topics :

  1. Transportation (roadways, streets and bridges)
  2. Health Care
  3. Education
  4. Agriculture
  5. Sports
  6. Culture

Transportation

  • Are we satisfied with its present state?
  • Is the duties levied on the importation of used vehicles helping?
  • Are they standards and quality controls relative to the size and types of vehicles imported?
  • What about our decades old road and bridges?
  • Is there room for a public transportation system?

My Response

In the first instance, commuters struggle with an inefficient, disorganized, unreliable privately owned and operated transportation system.

Why so? Bus owners, drivers and indeed the bus associations seems to hold the upper hand. The fall out is evident by the increase in vehicles on our roadways. Consequently persons are gravitating towards securing a drivers license and owning a vehicle.

The nation’s students especially can attest to the need for public transportation.

The ”Band Aid” approach (for example) towards solving the problem by increasing duties on the importation of used vehicles, only serves to ”fatten” the government purse. Furthermore, take a look at the centuries old roads and bridges. Moreover are these doing justice to the problem? Indeed NOT.

Is there standards and quality controls regulating the types and sizes of these vehicles?

First and foremost, we need to identify the root causes then, put structures in place to finally addressing the issue.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome.

  1. As it stands now, the problems we face today in this beautiful little island of ours could of being fixed many years ago. Through out the leader of Mr. Maurice Bishop, this present leadership has no interest like of them in the past to do so now.

The interest now is pocket and own for ourselves and family the rest we will try and see what we can do with it “that’s the general mind set of our leaders”. The only way this problems can be solve is from this little quote posted on the (Public Workers Union Building) in Port Highway “IN UNITY SUCCESS IS ASSURED” this is what we need Unity to make this happen in this little country of ours.

United we stand divided we fall, let’s come together as a people; bring these issues to the leaders and demand better roads, streets and bridges for our country.

  2. Senor Mitch i applaud your feed back. You are spot on and share the same view points. These discussions are about us as a people, our journey and yes our children’s future. Thank you …
